Special thanks to Phil Hathaway for compiling information in this guide.

"My wife and I canoed from Harmon Patridge Park to Parshallburg on Sunday.  There were 3 young eagles on the nest on the golf course at Juddville Road and we flushed a (probably) 4-year old several times north of Johnstone Road.  Its head and tail were turning white, but not completely.  I was shocked at how large the eaglets on the nest were.  They were huge I thought.  We also saw several green and great blue herons." - Kevin Smith, Shiawassee River recreationist
Fishing

The Shiawassee River has a reputation for good fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and northern pike from Byron to Chesaning.

The upper half of the river, above the confluence of the south branch and the main branch, near Byron, does not support much of a fishery.  The fish community is made up of small centrarchids and forage species.  From the confluence of the two branches down to Chesaning, the river supports a very attractive fishery for smallmouth bass and rock bass plus an occasional northern pike.  Below the dam at Chesaning, the catch includes the above species plus white bass, walleye, and channel catfish.

The Shiawassee Town dam impounds 76 acres of water and supports a modest fishery for smallmouth bass, rock bass, northen pike and sunfishes. There are three small low head dams in Owosso: the Hospital Dam, Owosso Dam, and Oliver Street Dam.  They form small ponds three to six acres in size and due to their riverine nature support fisheries for the species common to the river: smallmouth bass, rock bass, and northern pike.
