The Friends

Who are the Friends of the Shiawassee River?
The Friends of the Shiawassee River are a non-profit organization committed to improving the environment, promoting the responsible use and enhancing the appreciation of the Shiawassee River.
Our mission is to
care, to maintain and improve the water quality and habitats of the Shiawassee River watershed; share, to enhance the community's appreciation and knowledge of the river, especially among youth; and enjoy, to increase recreational access and responsible use of the Shiawassee River.

History of the Friends

The Friends of the Shiawassee River began in 1996 by residents of Shiawassee County to continue the work of Owosso resident Jim Miner who was passionate about the Shiawassee River. As a means of expanding the FOSR program, The Friends began partnerships with other organizations who were also working to protect the environment, such as the Saginaw Bay Watershed and other groups within Genesee and Oakland County.

What do we do?

  • We host annual River clean-up events in which community volunteers and members remove trash and debris found in and along the river.

  • We organize river workdays that specifically focus on the removal of invasive species that pose a threat to the river’s ecosystem.

  • We encourage reforestation of the Shiawassee riverbanks by increase the amount of vegetation buffers along streams and ditches through community tree planting events. The increased vegetation along the river helps reduce sediment, nutrient loss and increases that quality of water in the river.

  • We share our appreciation and enjoyment of the Shiawassee River with members of the community.
