    About the Pestival

    Garlic-Mustard-3-e1463428427128.jpg

Did you know that the non-native invasive plant, garlic mustard, was originally brought to the U.S. by settlers from Europe because it's an edible herb? The name says it all! This pesky plant lurking in clumps in your backyard can actually be used to spice your cooking! The Friends and DeVries Nature Conservancy decided to take advantage of the tasty properties of this plant to host a localvore fundraiser, the annual Garlic Mustard Pestival. The Pestival is the culmination of our spring garlic mustard pulls. Removing garlic mustard from the woods at DeVries helps restore a native riverbank woodland along the Shiawassee River. You can support the removal of this invasive species by attending our 10th Annual Garlic Mustard Pestival, an evening of fine dining at the Wrought Iron Grill.

    Bug ID Lab Night

Come see which macroinvertebrates we collected at each of our stream monitoring events! Identifying these creatures will give us good indication of the river's health at each of our sites! John Matousek, our ID expert from the DEQ, will teach you how to identify the macroinvertebrates. This is a great hands-on learning experience!

Shiawassee River Clean-Up - Owosso Site

Join the Friends and the Shiawassee County Health Department as we team up to cleanup our beautiful river in 2017!  Through funding from the Great Lakes Commission & the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the Friends of the Shiawassee River & the Shiawassee County Health Department  have removed hundreds of cubic yards of debris and more than 650 tires from the Shiawassee River during the past 20 years.

Since the first cleanup event in 1997, FOSR has engaged hundreds of volunteers in our Annual River Cleanup events. The goal of these cleanups is to remove man-made sources of pollution from the Shiawassee River through volunteer efforts, city and county partnerships, and support from local businesses. The impact of these partnerships has built a sense of pride among the community, and promotes the Shiawassee River as a recreational asset to Shiawassee County communities. In 2014, approximately 140 volunteers participated. Participating service groups included Corunna Rotary, who cleaned at McCurdy Park and Corunna Dam, and the Owosso Rotary Club, who volunteered at Harmon-Partridge Park in Owosso.
