Join the Friends and the Shiawassee County Health Department as we team up to cleanup our beautiful river in 2016! Through funding from the Great Lakes Commission & the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the Friends of the Shiawassee River & the Shiawassee County Health Department have removed hundreds of cubic yards of debris and more than 650 tires from the Shiawassee River during the past 20 years.
Since the first cleanup event in 1997, FOSR has engaged hundreds of volunteers in our Annual River Cleanup events. The goal of these cleanups is to remove man-made sources of pollution from the Shiawassee River through volunteer efforts, city and county partnerships, and support from local businesses. The impact of these partnerships has built a sense of pride among the community, and promotes the Shiawassee River as a recreational asset to Shiawassee County communities. In 2014, approximately 140 volunteers participated. Participating service groups included Corunna Rotary, who cleaned at McCurdy Park and Corunna Dam, and the Owosso Rotary Club, who volunteered at Harmon-Partridge Park in Owosso.
Friends of the Shiawassee River extends our deepest appreciation to our 2015 event business sponsors: J & S Tire, Oster Superior Threading, Owosso Graphic Arts, Mancino's of Owosso, Waste Management, The Bagelman, and Cheff's Canoe Rental. At this year's 2017 clean-up event, volunteers will meet at the Oakwood Avenue Bridge (behind the baseball fields) in Owosso or McCurdy Park in Corunna at 9 a.m. on July 29th.
If your club, organization, or business would like to volunteer as a group for this team building activity; please contact the Friends' office. We can assign your group to a particular stretch of the river, if given notice of your participation beforehand.
