June 7, Saturday: Native Plant Sale Location: Shiawassee Conservation District at 1900 S. Morrice Road in Owosso The Shiawassee Conservation District and the Friends of the Shiawassee River will be providing native plants to be sold to the community. Native plants are those that are best suited to grow and survive in our local area with little maintenance. A brief educational workshop will be given on the benefits of using native plants in your home landscaping. The community is encouraged to come learn about such native plants and why they are best suited and most beneficial to our local environment. July, Monthlong: Tire Collection Improve habitat and reduce the risk of infectious disease by helping to remove tires from the Shiawassee River! Through the support of the Michigan Volunteer Stream, River and Creek Cleanup Grants from the Great Lakes Commission, the Friends and the Environmental Health Division of the Shiawassee County Health Department will be coordinating an early cleanup of tires only and offering FREE collection and recycling of all tires removed from the River. All other tires will be accepted by the Shiawassee County Health Department at their annual Tire Collection Event on 8/2/08. All groups and individuals wishing to participate must contact the Friends of the Shiawassee River for more information and to register at (989) 723-9062 or shiawassee_mi@tnc.org.

August 2, Saturday 9:00 am-12:00pm: 11th Annual Friends of the Shiawassee River Cleanup! Location: Volunteers will meet at Walnut Hills Campground (Byron), Geeck Rd. Park (Bancroft), McCurdy Park (Corunna), Oakwood Street pedestrian bridge (Owosso), or Henderson Park (Henderson, north of Owosso) You can help improve and conserve the Shiawassee River by removing debris and garbage found in the River and along its banks. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to take part in this community event. Following the clean up, all volunteers are invited to the River Celebration for a free t-shirt and food from one of our local sponsors. There will also be Prizes awarded for the Most Unusual Find. Service clubs, businesses, church groups, and other large groups are invited to participate and encouraged to reserve their stretch of the Shiawassee River ahead of time. For only a $25 donation, you can sample a wonderful selection of wines and hors d'oeuvre. Guests will also enjoy music and a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit the activities of the Friends of the Shiawassee River. September 10, 2008, 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. FOSR MiCorps (Macroinvertebrate Monitoring) Informational meeting Location: Baker College Welcome Center, Owosso, Conference Room E Join the FOSR along the Shiawassee River at locations in Shiawassee and Livingston County to find and identify bugs living in our River's habitat. Volunteers will be needed to collect macroinvertebrates and, with the aid of trained aquatic ecologists, identify them to assess the condition of the Shiawassee River. All data will be reported to the DEQ to supplement their existing program. For more information on how you can get involved, please join us at this informal quesion and answer session. October 18, 2008 : Macroinvertebrate Collection & Identification Training Location: DeVries Nature Conservancy, Owosso Join our team and discover the secret life living in the Shiawassee River! The Friends of the Shiawassee River are recruiting volunteers to collect and help identify aquatic life in the River. Volunteer teams will work at one of several monitoring stations along the River. November November 1, 2008 : Stream Team Sampling Location: Various, sites exist in Livingston and Shiawassee Counties 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the DeVries Nature Conservancy in Owosso to gather equipment and travel to a sample site to collect aquatic insects living in the Shiawassee River watershed. Volunteers will be collecting bugs, sketching stream conditions and taking photos and do not need experience to participate. Opportunities are also available that do not require entering the stream. Those interested in participating at the sampling event on Saturday, November 1, 2008 from 10 a.m. to noon should contact the Friends of the Shiawassee River at shiawassee_mi@tnc.org or 989-723-9062. Volunteers interested in collecting at locations in Livingston County should contact Matt Bolang at 517-552-6870.
