Stream Monitoring Program

The Shiawassee Stream Team is an extension of the MICorps program

 and assists local and state governments, research institutions, and other community organizations gain a better sense of river health in order to quickly recognize and address pollution problems.

Shiawassee River
Water Trail

The Friends of the Shiawassee River is one of many organizations throughout the watershed that has joined a collaborative effort to form the Shiawassee River Watershed Coalition.  Thanks to the work done by the SRWC, an 88 mile stretch of the Shiawassee River was designated a State Water Trail in December of 2018 and is in the process of designation to become a National Water Trail.

Annual Shiawassee
River Cleanup

The Friends and our supporters have worked for 23 years now to help improve the health of the Shiawassee River.  Cleanup volunteers can choose to assist with the cleanup in the river and parks, or paddle stretches of the river via canoes in search of tires and other litter.

Obsolete Dam Removal


The Friends of the Shiawassee River work to promote a healthy Shiawassee River for the enjoyment of all.  Based on the best scientific research, the experiences of other rivers, and specific studies of the Shiawassee River, we are convinced that the River will be healthier without dams.
